QUICK TIP: Vitamin D (sunshine!) and Cancer:

Many people are presenting as Vitamin D deficient as fear of being out in the sun rises, this is why most GP’s will now test your levels when doing a blood test. Low levels of this vitamin can lead to many problems, including low immunity, weak bones, and may also lead to some forms of cancer.

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble pro-hormone (pre-cursor to an actual hormone) produced in the body in response to sunshine. Evidence has shown that Vitamin D can Increase the self-destruction of mutated cells, which if left could turn into cancerous cells, reduce the spread and reproduction of cancer cells, cause cells to become differentiated into specialised cells, which cancer cells often don’t do, and reduce the growth of new blood vessels from pre-existing ones, which would allow a dormant tumour to thrive and become cancerous.

It has been suggested that sunlight will protect against prostate, colon, breast and ovarian cancers (hormonal cancers), as well as melanomas.

Tips:

Getting 10 – 20 minutes in the sun without any sun cream on will help to boost Vitamin D levels – as long as you don’t get burnt, it isn’t too much; sun cream will block your ability to absorb the Vitamin D.

Foods high in Vitamin D: Sardines, Salmon, Tuna, Sunflower seeds, Eggs, Mushrooms, Cod liver oil.
